USA BANS VEGEMITE!
The bastards have banned vegemite.
The US FDA, apparently with far too much time on its hands, has banned the Australian icon vegemite. The reason, apparently, is that it contains folate, and by the FDA's reckoning that is illegal unless its added to bread or cereal.
Folate is a naturally occuring vitamin-B group substance required for the healthy development of foetuses. Generations of Australian's have grown up with the spread without ANY, repeat ANY suspected cases of vegemite poisoning. And for the record: Australia is the greatest sporting nation per capita on the planet. Coincidence? I think not.
It is also widely renowned as a virulent hang-over cure, and balm for school children with upset tummys.
The reason for the stupid ban on folic acid additions is not clear, as it is allowed to be added to cereals and bread. The fact that vegemite is generally added TO bread and thus is, technically, a bread additive, seems to have been lost on the FDA.
Among other little ironies lost on the FDA is the fact the country which has brought us Super-Size Me and crack cocaine (both within the FDA's sphere of influence) has banned the cornerstone of the healthy Aussie breakfast. The negative collective IQ of the FDA has apparently also yet to grasp the the sheer dumbness of allowing folate into something that makes up the bulk of many people's diet (bread) yet banning it from all other substances, highlighting the waste of space this bottom-heavy bureaucratic monstronsity is taking up.
Another bureaucratic waste of paperwork, the US customs, is apparently aware of the dangers of smuggling vegemite into the unsuspecting US public, and is stepping up measures to counteract this threat. Customs officials admitted they had a lot more time now that hadn't found a bomb in anyone's shoe for a while, but still haven't quite worked out how the Colombians are getting all the drugs and guns into the country.
"If we let vegemite, then we might as well open the gates to all sorts of illegal substances," a high-level cutoms spokesman said.
This would of course severely threaten the domestic producers of narcotics, and leave many ma & pa amphetamine labs out of work.
Small scale speed-manufacturers are already trying to reproduce the newly outlawed substance, but so far have had limited success.
"This is crap," said one Aussie expat, sampling the imitation vegemite. "It tastes like marmite or something. Although at least I won't need to sleep for four days, I don't think he cleaned up after his last speed batch."

What are the dangers of folate?
In the 40's some doctors suggested it might have been associated with neurological complications when associated with vitamin B12 deficiency.
Most of this work is now thrown out.
Besides, vegemite also contains B12 so there is not danger of a vitamin deficiency complication through vegemite comsumption.
On the plus side: it helps anaemia, it helps prevents vascular disease, it can retard the oncome of Alzheimers, prevent stroke, and prevent depression (that's right. Happy little vegemites. More than just a catchy slogan). It also helps prevent neural tube defects and spina bifida in developing embryoes.
